Vices and Taboos

The patterns of thought taught by the Arcana often cause behaviors that Samurai may consider eccentric or unbecoming. A character gains a Vice or a Taboo for each ring that that character knows an Arcana associated with. A character also gains a Vice or Taboo if they know more Arcana associated with a ring than that ring's rank, or if their total number of known Arcana exceeds their Void ring.

Vices
Samurai who study The Arcana often find themselves more eager to indulge in worldly pleasures and passions. Many, however, find a source of strength in their idiosyncrasies.



Lust
You gain a +5 general TN modifier if you go for more than (Willpower) days without sex, you also gain 2 points of lechery.
You gain 1k0 to social rolls generally, and 1k1 to seduction in particular.

Addiction
You are addicted to a particular substance or activity.
If you go without indulging your addiction for more than (earth) days you take a +5 TN modifier to all skill rolls. Anytime you are given an opportunity to indulge your addiction, you must roll a willpower test against a TN of 15-20
Once per day you may reroll dice on a roll pertinent to pursuing your addiction.


Greed
You must roll either willpower or honor vs TN 20 to willingly perform services without compensation.
You gain 10% more money from rewards and sales.

Gluttony
You pay double for any food and water, and must spend at least 1 koku per month on luxurious or excessive food items. Your water ring is considered one lower when calculating your speed.
Your earth ring is considered 1 point higher when calculating your wounds

Vanity
You must spend at least one hour each day grooming and dressing yourself, and suffer a +5 TN penalty to all skill rolls if you are unkempt.
You gain 1k0 on social rolls.

Wrath
You suffer a +5 TN modifier to any test to maintain your composure or hold your tongue.
You gain a free raise on attack rolls while injured.

Sloth
You require at least one extra hour of sleep each day, or else you suffer a +5 TN modifier to skill rolls related to intelligence or awareness. You must also make a willpower test vs TN 10-15 to exert yourself more than necessary.
You have vaguely prophetic dreams, and may divine weal or woe regarding a particular choice or event each day.

Pride
You are excessively proud of a particular skill you possess.
You gain 1k0 to all rolls with a particular skill when you choose this vice, but suffer a -1k0 on all skill rolls for one day whenever you fail at using your chosen skill in a public or important situation.

Cowardice
You gain +5 to your TN to be hit, but must roll Willpower TN 15 to willingly expose yourself to danger.

Taboos
Some Arcanists begin to adopt taboos, phobias or obsessive behaviors. For some, the caution serves them well.
Characters suffer a +5 TN modifier on all skill rolls whenever they break a taboo. If the Taboo was not willingly broken, the character may make an immediate Meditation 15 test to avoid a penalty. Otherwise, the penalty persists until the character spends one hour in meditation and succeeds at a TN 20 Meditation test to clear their mind.

You cannot touch anyone of the same/opposite gender
Gain +5 to contested social rolls against the chosen gender.

You may not touch animals
Gain +5 to your TN to be hit by animals

You may not be or become unclean
Gain +5 vs diseases and taint

You may not eat meat
Gain +5 against disease and poison

You may not act dishonorably
Gain 1k1 on honor tests

You may not lie
Gain 1k0 on social rolls
